A love story
We get so excited about proposals and we have a special one to share with you today. It's the love story of Kim Daugherty and Derek Dean.
Kim and Derek have known one another since they were freshmen in high school through a connection with his sister. Kim even remembers the first time she noticed him by their lockers. They shared friends and interests, but were never involved romantically.
Fast forward several years and they reconnected as their paths continued to cross — at sports events and parties — and the friendship continued to grow. So much so that Kim kept setting Derek up on dates with friends hoping the matchmaking would work. This went on for quite some time. Eventually it dawned on them that the reason these relationships never worked out was because they were actually right for each other. Making the jump from friendship to relationship was a big decision, because they didn't want to jeopardize their unique bond. Kim feels they have something very different and special. As things deepened, Derek started dropping hints about what kind of ring Kim envisioned if they decided to marry. She told him that just like their relationship, she wanted a ring that was different and special. Not a traditional diamond. Derek filed away the information and began to plot his proposal.
Armed with a few Pinterest pins and an image from the Nan Lee Loves Instagram feed, Derek made an appointment with us to design a custom engagement ring for Kim.
The ring turned out beautifully — a faceted oval morganite in a peachy blush hue, surrounded by a halo of diamonds set in white gold. The stone sits just high enough for a matching wedding band to nestle perfectly beside it when the ceremony comes next spring.
The ring was done just in time for a trip to New York the couple was taking. Overlooking the sparkling lights of the city under a blanket of snow, Derek handed Kim a glass of wine and proposed a toast which changed into a proposal of marriage taking Kim completely by surprise! We love the images they took during the rest of the trip cleverly working the ring into the shots.
Kim and Derek live in McKinney and work together at the boutique real estate brokerage — Daugherty + Barron Real Estate LLC that she owns with her sister.
